Tony the Greek Mural

Meet Tony the Greek. (No, not the infamous contract killer turned snitch.)

This part of a brick wall mural is a commissioned portrait of Tony Kiriakou, owner of the building and a diner called Wexford on Lawrence corner Warden in Scarborough (now part of amalgamated Toronto). The diner was first run by his immigrant parents and has been open for breakfast since 1958.

Toronto, 2012

This post is not intended as a recommendation for the diner, which I did not even see, let alone eat in, when I drove by a few days ago. I got my mural details by calling a Lebanese bakery shown online as being at this address and the now former tenant was wonderfully informative.

It IS intended to join Monday Mural, where you'll find links to more fun and fantastic murals around the globe.

Wow you sure get around capturing neat murals. Check your typo error. It's Lawrence and Warden.

It looks like our area is the centre of the mural universe this week. Nice one - I never get out to the east end much!

Thanks, Andy! I was just fixing my typo - caught by our host here - when you commented. :-)

The colors are very appealing today. I love the houses with the brick texture. You do find the murals!

What a very neat and colorful mural. That would really brighten a building.

Colorful mural -- he looks like he'd be a good host. Are you back in Toronto? did I miss something?

Tony was a big man over his town!
I remember this restaurant.

Oh, look, it's you — in Canada. Or is it? Perhaps this is an older photo? Nifty mural.
Interesting post about the Asian breakfasts, too. I don't mind scrambled eggs, but meat? No, I don't even want fried eggs. LOL
I haven't been commenting much lately. My health plays silly tricks on me, of course, and I was out on the west coast for a memorial service, but the worst thing is one of my school friends has gone blind this month. First one eye, and then the other. All the Okanagan Old Girls are in varying stages of shock, wanting to help, knowing there's nothing we can do, etc., etc.
I guess I'm just at that age when friends die, or are widowed, or...heaven help us, lose hearing or sight.
Great to see your blog, though.

Love the Vive Canada Wexford on the bottom. Really a nicely executed mural.

Tony looks like a warm guy. The village doesn't look that Geek to me, but what do I know? You are a one woman campaign to show that mural art can be found everywhere, partly because you seem to be everywhere. This week, Toronto seems to be the center of the mural universe. Thanks for contributing this to this week's Monday Mural.

I like the portrait. As for the landscape, it seems to me a mixture of countries, not only Greece.

I'm sure I'm projecting, but right now it represents being laden with the love of life.

Maybe I am having a good day ;o.

Lovely mural. Love the colors and the way the man lords over the town. If I were a business man and could afford it I would paint my face on the building as well.

I been told that face recognition is the first rule of being successful.

Hey Cisca-
I love that you can easily see the bricks in the backdrop. Helps understand the scope of this piece.
I hope all is well with you.

I hope as much work goes into food prep as it did into that mural! (o:

Hi there!
I love this one. It really does look more like a regular painting than a mural. Somebody spent a lot of time on it. Hope things are going well for you...

Are you in Toronto right now? Maybe we could get a blogger meetup together. :)
This is a nice mural. I don't get to that part of town too often.
