B is for Busker

Stephansplatz (St Stephen's Square) is called the heart and soul of Vienna. The cathedral is the key historical landmark, and an imposing one it is.

Yet for me it's the various street entertainers there who put the smile on my face. I  admire the courage of these buskers in displaying their talents to earn a living only from the generosity of appreciative audiences.

Vienna, 2011

B is the letter of the week at Jenny's Alphabe-Thursday and I link to the players with these buskers.

Thats why art will never truly die. I believe we need to keep art in schools completely but true artist will ALWAYS find a way to keep their craft alive

I love to see busking, as long as it is well done! Back in the early 90's, there was a group of buskers who used to perform in Manchester city centre (UK). They improvised and jammed with percussion instruments, 'real' and home-made. The rhythms were incredible!

What a great choice for the letter B, Francisca. We saw a lot of buskers when we were in Europe.
Wonderful photos, as always.

Everyone knows how I feel about the inclusion of art in education. It makes learning a lot more fun, and a whole lot easier.

Cathedral and clowns seems a strange juxtaposition. But I guess the buskers add life to the place.

Every big city has his "street entertainment" nowadays. I was there in the eighties and found it a formal, old fashioned city. My little children were sent of the gras in a parc by a man with a whistle! In Amsterdam everybody was lying on it.

We don't have as many of these folks as found in Europe...but you are right - they've got to be thick-skinned and have lots of courage to stand out in the crowd and "play" for money. What a way to make a living!

Nice cathedral shot. Of course, I now have a crick in my neck! ;-)

Buskers are so entertaining and always make me smile.

Busking is a hard life, that's for sure. Did you know that the guy who founded Cirque du Soleil started out as a busker?

When I was a kid there was a marvellous toy shop right next to Stephansdom. When I was last in Vienna in 2006, it had disappeared (but hey, that was 40 years ago!)

I love street entertainers. When we visit a city that has them, Bill is usually ahead of me by a couple of blocks while I stand mesmerized. He knows where to find me though!
